What causes food sensitivities?

Food sensitivities occur when you dog's immune system thinks an ingredient is an invader instead of a helpful nutrient. Food sensitivities and intolerances can develop over time because of genetics, digestive system inflammation, surgery or medication.

Proteins like beef, eggs, milk and chicken commonly trigger allergies in dogs. Grains and plant sourced ingredients are not common triggers.

What are common dog food allergy symptoms?

Common food allergies or sensitivities often manifest as either digestive upset or skin irritation. Look out for abnormal amounts of itchy skin, hair loss or even chronic ear infections.

"Limited Ingredient" recipes use uncommon proteins like salmon, lamb, duck and venison and starches unlikely to cause allergic reactions like peas, lentils or sweet potatoes. These simple recipes typically contain less than 15 core ingredients.*

*Vitamins and minerals are usually added to your dog’s food to make sure they get all the nutrients they need from their food, but typically are not allergens.

Sensitive to grains?
We can help with grain-free dog food.

Grain-free diets have become popular for pups, although there are varied opinions on the pros and cons. On one hand, pet parents shy away from grain-free dog foods because many recipes have been linked to canine dilated cardiomyopathy. On the other hand, pet parents choose a grain-free dog food for their pups with confirmed allergies or digestive issues.

If you believe your pup has sensitivities to grains, the best way to know is to get with your vet and test to find out! All PUPPO recipes don’t contain wheat, corn or soy. We use high quality starches in our grain-free recipes like sweet potatoes, peas and lentils.

Chicken-free dog food.

Chicken is a common dog food ingredient, but is also one of the most frequent causes of allergic reactions. We offer a variety of protein options including lamb and salmon for your sensitive pup.

Most dogs are sensitive to chicken as a main ingredient, but can be fine with small amounts of chicken fats that are used as deliciousness enhancers.

A personalized nutrition plan to fit all your pup's needs.

By customizing your pup’s food to their specific dietary needs, you’re able to avoid allergy triggers such as beef, milk, wheat or chicken. By taking control of the ingredients of your dog’s food, you’ll be able to serve food that’s specifically prepared for your pup with limited ingredients and lots of love.

Suspect your dog has a food allergy but you don’t know what they’re allergic to? A custom dog food diet can slowly eliminate potential dog food allergens until the cause of the reaction is found. Plus, with PUPPO, you'll get live support with Lynn to troubleshoot and tweak your pup's diet as needed.
