Dear Lynn, My dog decided to come home smelling like Pepe Le Pew! I gave him a bath with his regular shampoo - that didn’t work. I have always heard a tomato bath is the way to go - that didn’t work. HOW do I get rid of the stink? - Stinky in Savannah

Dear Stinky,

The tomato bath is somewhat of an “old wives tale” and it can get rid of some of the smell, but it does nothing to neutralize or truly alter the smell.  Do NOT bring your pup into the house unless you want the Pepe Le Pew smell to linger inside your house! As quickly as you can, use this recipe:

  • ¼ cup Baking Soda
  • 1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 1 Teaspoon of Dishwashing Detergent (Dawn works great)

I DO suggest wearing rubber gloves during the process of washing the stinky pup! Depending on the size of your pup, you may have to make more. Work it into your pups fur and down to the skin, rinse thoroughly! Be careful around the eyes as the peroxide can burn. It may have to be applied more than once. Remember that it is a peroxide solution and CAN bleach the fur. Do NOT store this solution, when you are finished - dump the unused portion. If stored in a closed container, it can explode. Feel free to bathe your pup in his regular shampoo after rinsing the solution. Good Luck!
